That Moment You Realize You Bought The Worst Car In America: 2015 Audi Q5 TDI

What was I thinking?

My wife was pregnant, I wanted an M3 and she wanted a drivers license, so I bought a car for her. Guess who still doesn’t have her license.

Not only does this particular model suffer from the WORST depreciation amid mid-size suv’s, my dumbass thought diesel was a great idea.

So not only can I not sell it for a reasonable price, I can’t trade it for a reasonable price, I can’t live with it for a reasonable price, just burns all over like I laid down naked in a field of poison ivy.

I just don’t know what to do.

I just don’t know what to do.

Continue driving it? It isn’t broken and it is under warranty, correct?

It’s MSRP is just over 62k. If I were to trade right now, I would be offered probably 38k. Which is in my book a total loss as right now it takes around a year to pay off 10k, BUT that means it’s a year older. SO basically, it will never be worth trade-in, especially due to the scandal.

I wish, and thought about it, but I live in Brooklyn so I have no place to store a track car and trailer, plus this POS can only tow 4400 lbs. With most car trailers around 1300lbs empty, that doesn’t leave me with much room and as much as I love an old Lancia, even a track focused Porsche is around 3k lbs.

Do you like driving it? I drove an SQ5 before I bought my S3 and it was really nice!

Since it seems like you’ll need to hang onto it at least for a little while, why not see if you can enjoy driving it? Plus you may end up getting a little coin from a class action suit or some other form of comp.

In the wake of all that has happened, it’s still a super nice car. I would wait until the smoke clears, then see what your options are.

You know that location near you where you always have to avoid some well-insured soccer mom or retiree doing something stupid? Go drive there for a while and let one of them write the thing off for you.

Do you need to drive it? If not, check out a personal car rental service like Turo/Relay Rides. Provided your insurance will allow for it, you can rent the car out for $50 a day or more. You might be able to generate some income out of it if it were to sit undriven otherwise.

~20K depreciation for a 2015. I need to start looking at Q5s.

Sell it in Canada and you’ll have the money you want for it.
People crave for diesel cars in here.

While it doesn’t help now, next time have her get the license first, and then get the car.

If you can wait for the brouhaha to die off (and it will), then you can trade for something far less costly.

I did look up the base MSRP, and what Audi is asking for them is absurd.

Really? I think the Q5 is fantastic, my parents have a 2.0t model. Why are you even worried about trading it at all? Just drive until full electrical failure*

And tell the wife to get a license!

*this is the Audi equivalent for “until the engine blows up” or “the wheels fall off,” neither of which will occur.

So just keep it. What’s the big whoop? You can’t pick up stuff from Home Depot in an M3.

i’m pretty sure there’s separate insurance for relay rides. so anything that happens while “relaying a ride” would be covered by that insurance and not impact your other policy.

There have been several concerns with this though, as I recall one case where the driver of a rented vehicle crashed and was killed, and the injured parties sued the rental company and the owner of the car for damaged

1. Why did you buy a car for her if she doesn’t have her licence?

Far from the worst car in America though.

Sell everything, buy an Miata, do a track day at every race track in the country, then move to Mexico and live under the assumed name Senor Raymundo Hardibird to hide from the angry wife and the lawyers. While in Mexico, write a book about your journey and self-publish it on Amazon. Use the massive profits from your book to buy a village in Mexico and turn it into the official Oppo racetrack and clubhouse. Then we’ll all visit you, and someone will bring along an Audi Q5 for you to destroy using high explosives. Only then will it be over.

Because she did not want to take the driving test in my Porsche, which is understandable. Plus she didn’t want to drive it, which I wouldn’t let her either. So she liked this, and I thought it would be OK for the both of us, but now she shows no signs of getting her license and this diesel scandal just pisses me off. So, it’s more of a threefer: depreciation + scandal + unkept promise = unhappy me.

it’s a cool looking car. it handles decently well. the TDI should be netting you decent MPG’s.

Safe, relatively reliable, good on gas, new.

There's people who'd kill for something like that in a car. I say drive it and learn to love it. it's what I did with my car
